From 8th -12th April, 1917, the 15th London battalion of 140 Brigade, 47th Division were in the front line in the left section of the Canal sub sector at Ypres. This was always one of the most active and dangerous places along the entire Western Front with almost constant artillery action by both sides, regular patrols and raiding parties being sent out and the ever present threat of snipers. Over this five day period twenty men from 15th London were killed and more wounded. The Battalion Diary does not go into any detail concerning these casualties so it is not known how exactly Albert Carpenter was killed on 9th April.
